So, what do we really know about the Prime Minister?

So, as I was looking up Russian news, I found this. The Prime Minister, Vladimir Putin, was given a provocative present. A calender full of beautiful women, in the playboy fashion, with little speech bubbles saying things like, "We love you." and "How about a third time?" referring to he would run to be president again . This calender was supposed to show that smart women could be beautiful and the people of the magazine who made the calender wanted to wish the Prime Minister a happy birthday. It is assured that the girls will be shown no penalties but a mild lecture.
I have to say, this make you smile, but it also makes you think. I am sure the Prime Minister has recieved some interesting gifts in his time, but as to calenders like these? Things that make you go hmmm...

  1. Yuck - that's all I have to say about calendars with pretty women on them, no matter what the purpose or the cultural twist.

Here is the thing I think is worth discussing - What are the pros and cons of having leaders elected repeatedly without term limits? Putin is trying to stay in power, and we are critical of him. Chavez is trying to hold on to power in Venezuela, and we are critical of him. Our own presidential term limits only allow a person to be in office for 8 years maximum, and many would argue that those years are barely enough for an administration to accomplish real reform or solidify worthy policies (particularly when the country elects a congress weighted on the opposite political party.)

There is no stigma attached to senators maintaining their seats for dozens of years. We revere judges who have held their posts for decades. So, what are the REAL issues surrounding leaders and their efforts to keep their leadership positions?

  2. Mrs. Hoyle, I think that you have addressed a very interesting topic.

I think that eight years is long enough to accomplish desired policies. After all, when considering the current presidency, the Healthcare agenda was pushed through within two years. It is true that such agendas would be more difficult with an opposing Congress; however, that would maintain a balance of power. (Something that was very important to the Founding Fathers.)

Also, if it was an excellent policy, would it not be supported by the majority even after the current President leaves office?

As to unlimited terms for Senators and Congressmen, I think that America should seriously consider imposing term limits on them. After all, 32 years or more in Congress can lead to serious corruption.

If there was no term limit, there would be more opportunity for corruption to flourish. The possibility to fall into dictatorship also rises. Just look at Cuba - no term limits there!
